Efforts to clean up New York waters have proved helpful as Eastern Oysters are slowly making a return back to the waters of the Eastern coast such as Chesapeake Bay. It is curious to ponder whether the returning oysters are at all genetically different from the old oysters and furthermore, are there some genetic mutations that allow the oyster to better withstand P. marinus outbreaks? Using the power of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) we can analyze the DNA of the current Chesapeake Bay Oysters and compare that DNA to older C. virginica PCR samples from a data base.
