Our aim is to use DNA barcoding to assess the identity of various fishes in the genus Menidia, sampled in disparate locations within New York City's coastal waterways. These fish have cryptic morphology and we assess barcoding as a method to be used by non-experts to identify members of this important, ubiquitous species. We also assess the phylogenetic diversity encoded within the COI gene to determine local variability in each species.
