Abstract:

In this Urban Barcoding Project, we will ascertain the identities of numerous species of insects, primarily ants, living in our local Bergen County ecosystem. By determining their identities, we will then be able to use a list of New Jersey’s native insect species in order to find out whether they are indigenous or invasive to Bergen County. If indigenous, we will investigate their niche in the ecosystem and observe the positive effects that they have on the ecosystem. If invasive, we will determine their place of origin, their method of reaching Bergen County, and the extent of the harm they may have caused to the ecosystem.
