We noticed that physically, all orange citrus fruits have a lot in common. When looking through the naked eye we can clearly see that there is a physical relationship between the different species of orange citrus fruits. The purpose of this project is to investigate the differences and similarities between the chloroplast DNA sequences of different species of orange citrus fruits and to see what evolutionary connection they share. We will collect samples of oranges, kumquats, blood oranges, and tangerines available for purchase in NYC stores. We observed that each type of citrus is different in characteristics such as skin texture and thickness, depth of orange color, size, and sweetness.
