Abstract:

There are over 10,000 different Formicidae species worldwide, some of which are also found in the local NYC area. Humans have an impact on the ant population of Manhattan. We plan to study the effect an increased exposure to human activity will have on ant populations in Manhattan. We will be collecting samples of ant species from a few areas in Manhattan; two separate locations in Central Park and two sections of an area with an increased human presence. Once we collect these samples, we will analyze their genetics through DNA barcoding. This information will give our group an insight into how human activity effects the biodiversity of ant populations in Manhattan.
