Abstract:

Perennial plants are special plants that stay alive for most of the seasons and that is what makes them perennial. The most common perennial plant many people might know of are evergreen trees, like pine trees. There are many other plants like evergreen trees that live more than one season. It can be flowers, bushes, leaves and even a potato! The benefits of a perennial plant are wide-ranging, providing many ecosystem services such as maintaining a healthy soil, high quality water, controlling erosion, and enhancing wildlife habitats. In this research, we will determine the biodiversity perennial plants using DNA barcoding. The places we will be collecting the sample are in NYC boroughs, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Brooklyn.
