Fungi are a type of eukaryotic organism that have the ability to shape both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, “allowing for the formations of niches and greater diversification” (Greenwood, 2021).” According to the National Park Service, fungi can be found in parks and “fungi help with decomposition and nutrient cycling. They provide nutrients to trees and other plants. Some plants, like ghost plants and pink lady’s slippers, could not survive without help from their fungal partners.” (Greenwood, 2021) Therefore, fungi are essential organisms of any ecosystem and greatly contribute to taking care of habitats. Identifying fungi in Central Park will create an understanding of what lives in this park. Fungi have specifically been found in Central Park, and across New York City, and is an ideal area to compare the diversity of fungi in crowded areas of Central Park compared to more secluded areas. This can yield results that show how the larger human population can impact nat
