Abstract:

The goal of our project is to use DNA barcoding of the COI marker to identify the species of pipefish samples we gathered from various locations around the New York City region. Pipefish (Syngnathus sp.) are morphologically similar to each other. We hope to detect variations in the species or populations using methods of DNA barcoding. We will be using these techniques as well as physical characteristics to identify the specimens. We will construct phylogenetic trees to map the genetic relationships of the pipefish we collected over the summer of 2012.
