Abstract:

In this Urban Barcoding Project we seek to identify through DNA barcoding seven aquatic and semi aquatic plants, and explore the nitrate filtering abilities of Lenma Minor and Ceratophyllum Demersum. We will also create a phylogenetic tree to connect these species through their ancestry. Our group collected seven plant samples from two areas in our community, Tenafly Nature Center and Roosevelt Common. We collected dirt and water samples from the areas that we obtained the aquatic and semiaquatic plants. Using PictureThis we identified the different plants. However, we will use DNA barcoding to prove the identities further. Key objectives include using DNA barcoding to identify the plants, researching how they affect the world by reviewing works of literature, and conducting controlled experiments to evaluate the nitrate uptake efficiency of the two selected species. Using this approach we aim to identify seven plants and show to the world their positive impacts to the environment arou
