Abstract:

The tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an invasive tree species that has spread prolifically across the United States, outcompeting native plants and thus altering ecosystems. Its allelopathic effects, high pollen production, and close ecological relationship with the invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) heighten ecological and public health concerns. However, little is known about its local ecological impact. This study aims to evaluate whether the tree of heaven reduces local plant diversity in Rye, NY, using DNA barcoding. Leaf samples will be collected from two regions, a control site without the presence of the tree of heaven, and an experimental site within a two meter radius of the tree of heaven. Samples will be processed following the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s barcoding protocol, and analyzed with DNA Subway and NCBI BLAST to calculate biodiversity metrics. Results will clarify the tree of heaven’s localized ecological impact and inform future manage
