Abstract:

The Grand Canal located in Oakdale NY, is a shallow man made waterway and branch of the Connetquot River. The Grand Canal is also a key to an extensive wetland system. The Canal is surrounded by residential properties and commercial properties. Issues have been brought to light from concerned residents about the general water quality deterioration. Due to surface water runoff from residential commercial and recreational areas, discharges from septic systems, and discharges from boats and jetskis, pollution has increased tremendously. In this experiment macroinvertebrates are being utilized. Macroinvertebrates is the organisms that will be collected because they are biological indicators. The water will be tested at different points for levels of pollution.
