Abstract:

Beetle species will be collected at several locations which include the wooded area surrounding our high school campus pond, as well as two residential homes in Shoreham, NY. The Northeastern forests, such as the Pine Barren region found in New York state, are heavily impacted by invasive forms of beetles that can destroy large areas of trees very quickly. Researchers have concluded that the Dendroctonus frontalis (Southern pine beetle or SPB), the Anoplophora glabripennis (Asian longhorned beetle or ALB), and the Agrilus planipennis (Emerald Ash Borer beetle or EAB) are three key suspects in the destruction of the Pine Barrens. The goal of this experiment is to identify the locations to which these species of beetle have been reaching in the Pine Barrens Region, by surveying our local ecosystems. By identifying beetles found on our school campus, which is located within the Pine Barren protected region adjacent to Brookhaven Park we can determine the extend eastward on Long Island tha
