Abstract:

Our aim is to obtain water samples from the Hudson River and the East River and sequence the bacterial DNA found in the samples using DNA metabarcoding. After the bacterial species present are determined, the differences in species present in the two rivers will be noted and analyzed. According to our research, the East River seems to have safer levels of bacteria than the Hudson River, so the East River could be used as a control in which the Hudson River’s concentration of different species of bacteria will be compared to. Data will be collected on specific species of bacteria, such as harmful bacteria that could inflict waterborne illnesses or fecal indicator bacteria, present in the rivers. We hope to understand how safe or unsafe the rivers are.
