Abstract:

Through DNA barcoding we plan to identify small aquatic invertebrates that resemble amphipods and arthropods, compare the DNA sequences of the samples collected to determine relationships, use the DNA sequencing information to identify invasive organisms, determine if any samples may be carriers of disease or may cause a decrease in beneficial “control” species , and compare our sample identities to previous years data. WE plan to use this data to determine the overall health of the river in addition to water quality data collected during the Day in the Life of a River Program.
