Abstract:

We will be receiving samples of Aedes atlanticus and Aedes tormentor previously collected from the Suffolk County Health Department from various areas, including Connetquot State Park, North Carolina, and Florida, and delivered to Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center. After attempting to morphologically identify the mosquito samples, we will isolate DNA, and barcode the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) using established protocols at Sachem High School East. Moreover, if the differences in the DNA samples are diverse enough we would suggest the emergence of a new species/subspecies.
