Abstract:

In our project, we will test samples from The Suffolk County Department of Health unknown samples that were collected in Long Island and from The Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center’s samples. We will test them to see if the unknown mosquito samples are actually a species from the Southern United States and are not just phenotypically similar to those from the Eastern United States. We will look for southern mosquito species that don’t usually habitat in the east such as yellow fever mosquito, common malaria mosquito, southern house mosquito, and the winter marsh mosquito. If we find these species within the unknown samples from The Suffolk County Department of Health’s samples, we will explain the threat that this poses to the health of populations in the Eastern United States and how this relates to climate change overall.
