Abstract:

Each invertebrate plays a key role in the functioning of an ecosystem. For instance, ants work in ecosystems to turn and aerate the soil, which allows both water, oxygen and nutrients to make it to the plants roots. For our collection we will be capturing invertebrates from Heckscher Park in Huntington, NY. This area poses the possibility of being greatly diverse due to the water and wooded areas present. To capture such invertebrates we will use various techniques involving netting, funneling, and fundamental collection techniques. However, to the human eye many invertebrates are too small and intricate to determine a specific species based on observation.
