Abstract:

The samples we will be analyzing were collected during a Citizen Barcode Network event at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, NY on July 30, 2021, as part of a bioBlitz. A bioblitz is a type of sampling event where scientists and citizen scientists aim to collect as many species from a certain area during a certain time period (iNaturalist, iNaturalist.org). Bioblitzes are important for measuring biodiversity in various ecosystems, and knowledge of this biodiversity can help scientists to understand how various organisms interact within these ecosystems and can help with conservation efforts and with efforts to control invasive species. Biodiversity of local ecosystems is important to human health because it may affect things like agriculture, energy production and conservation, as well as affect public health concerns such as threat of disease and maintaining access to fresh water (World Health Organization, who.int).
