Charles Davenport was a biologist and a eugenicist who worked at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He was born on June 1st 1866 and died on February 18th, 1944. He started visiting Cold Spring Harbor in the 1890’s, and made his first biodiversity observations in 1898, which he published in his field guide, The Fauna and the Flora of Cold Spring Harbor, LI. He was mostly looking at invertebrates found in the water. Since then, the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center has had summer camps from 2012 to 2014 to collect data about biodiversity in the Harbor. Today, many people find specimens in the harbor and post their findings to iNaturalist.
