In 1898, Charles B. Davenport collected and documented the biodiversity of Cold Spring Harbor. He composed this data into a field guide titled, “Fauna and Flora About Cold Spring Harbor L.I.” Some others have researched specific species in the harbor like Francis Noves Balch and his research of Marina mollusca and N. M. Crier and his study of specifically the flora of the Harbor. Since then, programs have done projects involving DNA barcoding and taxonomic identification to continue compiling data and updating which species live in the harbor. We must do this to ensure that the biodiversity didn’t decrease and if it did decrease, provide a reason to start investigating why the biodiversity might have decreased.
