Abstract:

Bats are insectivores that have a diet made up of mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and flies. Certain species of bats, like the Big brown bat, Little brown bat, Eastern red bat, Hoary bat, Tri-colored bat, Northern long-eared bat, and Silver-haired bat are found on Long Island. Having a biodiversity of bat species is important because they perform essential ecological functions. These include controlling insect pests, pollinating plants, and dispersing seeds. The goal of this experiment is to test if the bat biodiversity on Long Island is being properly preserved or not. The methodology includes contacting the Emergency Environmental Control to possibly acquire bat guano. If that method is not approved, then guano will be collected from bat boxes at the cross-section between Wyoming Avenue and West Beech Street in Long Beach, and at the Orowoc Creek in Great River, with proper permission being granted.
