The group walked into a creek in the massapequa preserve which is a temperate deciduous forest and collected various bug samples for later testing. Using waders we went into the cold water to use a kick net and try to collect aquatic bug samples resting on the floor of the creek. The researchers went into the water using sifters to see if any bugs were in the sediment. Some of us searched for bugs in the mud using a shovel and a sifter. Also some of us went and looked under strips of bark that was loose on toppled over trees which harbored many bugs. These 9 samples were collected and placed into a tube containing pure ethanol to kill the bug and preserve it. These bugs will later be used for DNA barcoding at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
