Abstract:

The Longwood High School DNA barcoding team will be used to develop research projects for students in the Advanced Science Research class, which will be based on species detected in Carmans River. The classification of insects and macroinvertebrates will be combined by visual inspection with DNA classification of samples that are not easily identified by inspection using methods such as Gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). The area of interest for this project is to detect invasive or native species that may be entering the Carmans River. Resources will be used to provide information and pictures of invasive or native organisms and invertebrate species in the Carmen’s River to provide a deeper specificity in sample collection.
